First-Time Buyers: How Confident Are You About The Home-Buying Process?
Buying a house can be complicated, confusing and difficult to complete, even as someone who’s been through it all before. For first-time buyers (FTBs) in particular, however, it can be something of a minefield, with many obstacles to overcome before contracts are exchanged.
It’s not uncommon for FTBs to find the process overwhelming, so it can be useful to enlist the services of a mortgage advisor at the start, as they’ll have a wealth of knowledge about the property market and can be a reassuring ear from start to finish, helping to make the journey a little easier and perhaps even enjoyable.
But rest assured that you’re by no means alone if you are feeling a little uncertain at the moment. Research from Barratt Homes, published earlier this year, found that 47 per cent of FTBs admitted that they didn’t feel confident about the home-buying process, with a knowledge gap of the market very much in evidence.
Interestingly, one of the biggest challenges facing FTBs was understanding the different mortgage options available, which is where a mortgage advisor can prove particularly useful.
How to be confident in buying a house
It’s entirely natural to feel a little anxious when buying a property for the first time. It’s one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your lifetime and there’s a significant amount of money at stake, so you need to make sure that you get it right.
Before you begin, take the time to carry out a comprehensive review of your finances so you know what your monthly income and expenses are. Then devise a realistic budget and make sure you stick to it. From there, you can get a mortgage in principle, which will show you what you can afford to borrow.
One common fear among FTBs is buying the wrong house in the wrong area – but you can alleviate this concern by doing as much research as possible. Visit the places you’d like to live, speak to local people and spend time in the area so you can get a feel for it and see if you’d be happy living there.
There’s no such thing as too much research and you’ll be far better able to make an informed decision if you take your time, helping to ensure that you’re less likely to make a poor choice.
Ultimately, however, one of the very best ways to give you more confidence about buying a house as an FTB is using all the professional help that’s available.
Estate agents can help you gain insights into the property market and negotiate with sellers on your behalf, a mortgage broker will help you understand the financial aspects of the process and a solicitor will take care of all the legalities for you.
